Archery Terminology
Arm Guard
Placed on the bow arm to protect against the string slap while shooting
Arrow Nock
The plastic end of arrow that is either slipped into or glued onto the arrow shaft that snaps onto the string
Arrow Shaft
The straight part of the arrow that is typically made of wood, carbon or aluminum and cut to length depending on draw length
Arrow Spine
The stiffness of the arrow. The proper spine is determined by the draw length, draw weight, weight of the field point/broadhead, and poundage of the bow. An arrow that is too stiff or too flexible will not shoot accurately or consistently
Back of the Bow
The side of the bow that faces the target when shooting
Belly of the Bow
The side of the bow that faces the shooter when shooting
Board Bow
A bow made from wood boards (dimensional lumber) that are pre-cut, kiln dried and can be purchased at lumber yards
Bow Arm
The arm used to hold the bow (i.e. right-handed archers hold the bow in their left hand)
Center Serving
String that is wrapped around the bow string to protect it from damage from arrow nocks
Draw Length
This is distance from the string to the back of the bow when the bow is drawn. Bows are designed and tillered (wood removed from the belly) for a maximum draw length. A bow that is drawn further than designed may severely damage the bow and will void its warran
Dry Firing
This occurs when pulling the string back without a nocked arrow and releasing the string as if to shoot the bow. Dry firing a bow may potentially severely damage the bow and will void its warranty
Field Point/Broadhead
The weighted metal tip of the arrow (measured in grains) that is either screwed into or glued to the arrow shaft. The weight of the field point will affect the spine of an arrow
Fletching
The feather or plastic vanes that spin and stabilize the arrow in flight
Flipped Tips
When the outermost portion of the limbs are bent, with steam or dry heat, pointing the tips away from the archer. This potentially improves string angle to allow for shooting a shorter bow when hunting
Handle
The middle section of the bow where you grip the bow
Limb
The long and flexible portion of the bow that stores energy when drawn to shoot an arrow
Longbow
A style of bow that is made of wood and drawn by hand
Nock
The plastic piece of the arrow that connects the arrow to the bow string
Nock Fit
The arrow nock should gently snap onto the string and stay attached when suspended from the string. A nock that is too tight may affect arrow flight. A nock that is too loose, will potentially allow the arrow to fall off the string while being drawn
Nock Groove
The groove at the tips of the limb that keeps the string from sliding down the limb
Nock Tip Overlay
Any natural or artificial material glued to the tip of the limb to provide cosmetic additional strength to the nock grooves
Self Bow
A bow that is made without any artificial or natural materials added to the back of the limbs. Some bows, made from less than ideal staves or boards, are backed with linen, rawhide, sinew or other natural or artificial materials to provide additional protection from splinters lifting when the bow is drawn
Stave Bow
A bow that is made from a tree branch or tree trunk that was cut down, split and air dried over time
